Jin Akanishi Enters U.S. Market with Debut Single Featuring Jason Derulo

Top-selling Japanese vocalist, musician, and actor Jin Akanishi will be releasing his first all-English single in the U.S. on November 8. “Test Drive featuring Jason Derulo,” will be available through digital retailers and streaming services starting on that date at 7AM PST. “I’ve been given this great opportunity to crossover to the U.S.,” said Akanishi, who signed a global deal with Warner Music Group in December 2010, “and I’m so excited to be able to share my music and style with more people.”

Overheard 2 Opened as Summer Blockbuster in China

Crime thriller Overheard 2, starring Hong Kong actors Sean Lau, Louis Koo, and Asian American actor Daniel Wu, opened this week in China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. With a different storyline from Overheard, the so-called sequel attracted a lot of attention from audiences who were curious how it can possibly follow the success of the first film by continuing the exploration of greed in the financial system and its relationship with wiretapping technologies in modern society.

Bath houses in Korea (known as “JjimJilBang“) must be a big thing, because they show up in almost every Korean drama I’ve watched. Secret Garden, Brilliant Legacy, You’re Beautiful…they all have some element of bath-house-dom. I’m definitely not complaining; I’m just seeking some understanding of this phenomenon.

Wu Xia Brings Together Two of Asia’s Top Actors

Takeshi Kaneshiro and Donnie Yen in one movie? Say no more—I will see it and I will enjoy it. Wu Xia (also known as “Dragon” in the U.S., according to imdb), a martial arts film directed by Peter Chan, is on the top of my list of the most anticipated movies for this year. Not only does the film star two of Asia’s most versatile (and bankable) actors, it’s also directed by the man responsible for one of my all-time favorites: The Warlords.

Dancers Fired Up at Funkanometry SF’s Fourth Annual Sockhop

Last Saturday (6/25), hip hop dance company Funkanometry SF held its fourth annual Sockhop dancing showcase at the San Francisco Regency Center. Many dance companies participated at this fun-filled event and showed off their moves and grooves on stage. In order to get a closer look of this event, our very own Mae Cruz interviewed some of the dancers and performers on that night.

Model Minority’s “Vincent Chin” Memorial Song

Today (6/23) is the 29th anniversary of the death of Asian American, Vincent Chin. As a memorial to this victim of a hate crime in 1982, rap group Model Minority decided to release their song “Vincent Chin.” earlier than the rest of their mixtape.
